Magical Lake of Brienz

Magical, that's how we feel about the magnificent Lake of Brienz, this lake on the edge of the Alps, whose steep, densely wooded and towering slopes continue below the water level. It used to be the eastern part of the former Wendelsee, which was formed by the retreating of the Aare Glacier about 10,000 years ago. The accumulation of alluvion from the rivers formed the Bödeli and did cut the Wendelsee into two lakes; Interlaken was founded much later on this spot. The separation into Lake Brienz and Lake Thun was probably completed around the year 1000. The cleanest lake in Switzerland, with its maximum depth of 260 meters, is a cool, even cold lake and is fed by water from the magnificent surrounding glaciers.
